Company Heritage & Innovation
Pioneering Vibration Control Since 1943
Barry Controls was founded in 1943 and initially developed vibration isolators for the US Navy. This military heritage established the foundation for the rigorous engineering standards that continue to define Barry Mounts today. The company's parent organisation, Hutchinson, was founded in 1853 and first manufactured waterproof rubber boots before expanding into industrial applications. Today, Hutchinson is owned by the French oil company Total, providing substantial resources for ongoing research and development.
Aviation Expertise Dating Back Over a Century
In 1910, Hutchinson produced coated fabrics for aircraft and airships that were used in the first aircraft crossing of the English Channel. Their sister company Paulstra developed "Dynaflex," the first aircraft piston engine isolation system, in 1934. This pioneering work laid the groundwork for modern aircraft engine mounting technology.
Corporate Evolution
In 2014, Barry Controls changed their legal name to Hutchinson Aerospace & Industry, Inc., along with their 23+ sister companies, unifying the organisation under the Hutchinson brand whilst maintaining the renowned "Barry" name for their aviation mount products that operators worldwide trust.
Technical Excellence & Material Science
Proprietary Elastomeric Materials
Hutchinson's chemists develop and produce proprietary blends of elastomeric materials specifically for use in Barry Mounts. These include highly-damped elastomers that excel in aircraft engine isolators. The company maintains expertise in bonding metal to rubber, a critical capability for producing durable, high-performance engine mounts.
Application-Specific Material Selection
Hutchinson uses a wide variety of elastomeric materials and blends to suit the varying needs of particular aircraft applications:
- Natural Rubber - Selected for its excellent tear resistance
- Chlorylbutyl & Chlorylprene - For chemical resistance and durability
- EPDM - Providing weather and ozone resistance
- Silicone - For high resistance to heat in demanding engine bay environments
- Metal Mesh - For specialised high-temperature applications
Superior Design Features
Barry Mount piston isolators are designed and approved to be used without silicone-filled "jelly bags" that surround the centre spacers of some competitor's isolators. These jelly bags can leak and cause otherwise premature replacement of isolators. Barry Mounts piston isolators will never leak.
Some Hutchinson aircraft piston engine isolators use molded rubber bonded to their centre spacers. This feature provides torsional stiffness and aids in providing a "soft snub" instead of a "hard snub," improving comfort and reducing stress on airframe components.
OEM Partnerships & Aircraft Coverage
Hutchinson Aerospace is the OEM supplier to many aircraft manufacturers, demonstrating the trust that major aviation companies place in Barry Mount technology. OEM partnerships include:
Business & General Aviation
Textron Aviation (Premier 1, King Air, Beech 1900), Gulfstream (GII, GIIB, GIII, G350, G-IV, G450), Maule, Pilatus (PC-6, PC-7, PC-9, PC-12, PC-24), Piaggio, Daher-Socata TBM, HondaJet, Eclipse, Extra, Quest Aircraft, Viking Air (Twin Otter), Air Tractor, Thrush Aircraft, Pacific Aerospace
Regional & Commercial Aviation
Britten Norman, Casa, Dornier, Twin Commander, British Aerospace, SAAB, Fairchild/Merlin, ATR, Boeing, Airbus, Embraer
Cessna Aircraft Coverage
Recently, Hutchinson Aerospace received FAA/PMA certification on isolators for Cessna 172RG, 172Q, 172R, 172S, Cessna 182S, 182T, Cessna 206H, T206H, and Cessna Citation IV through VII plus Corvalis (TTX), among others.
Outstanding Value & Cost Efficiency
Competitive Pricing
Barry Mount piston isolators represent excellent value. They typically cost less than competitor products whilst delivering superior engineering. A price comparison demonstrated that Barry's isolator for a Beech Bonanza cost significantly less than the competition's equivalent part, whilst also being a more robust isolator that spreads loads out over a wider surface area.
FAA/PMA Approval Through Testing
Barry obtained FAA/PMA approval for many parts via testing and computation rather than simple identicality. This approach allows them to engineer improvements over competitor designs whilst maintaining full regulatory compliance. The result: better-performing mounts at competitive prices.
Inventory Efficiency
Hutchinson Aerospace has several piston engine part numbers that are FAA/PMA approved to replace 2, 3, or 4 different competitor part numbers. This makes it possible to stock fewer Barry Mount parts whilst still servicing a wider variety of aircraft, reducing inventory costs for maintenance facilities and distributors.
Rebuilt Exchange Programme
Hutchinson offers economical Rebuilt Exchange isolators for a wide variety of Turboprop, Business Jet, Regional, and Commercial aircraft. This programme helps lower aircraft operators' direct operating costs whilst maintaining the highest standards of quality and reliability.
Advanced Isolator Technology
Fluid-Filled Isolators for Business Jets
Hutchinson has developed specialised fluid-filled, elastomeric isolators for business jets that incorporate two auxiliary tuned mass absorbers (TMAs) to reduce N1 and N2 vibrations. Hutchinson holds a patent for this proprietary technology. These advanced isolators can change their isolation characteristics during flight to maximise performance, providing exceptional comfort for passengers and crew.
Continuous Innovation
From designing customised materials to integrating connected solutions, Hutchinson contributes to making mobility of the future safer, more comfortable, and more sustainable. This commitment to innovation ensures that Barry Mounts will continue to lead the industry in aircraft vibration isolation technology.
